“FUTURE=FERTILE”

As the recent past lays sweating in its deathbed and we all recoil at the shock of its demise, it is easy to overlook the biological fact that we live in a cyclical world.

The rate of change—evolution—is increasing. Those hungry to partially shape what’s next, strive to do so. It figures that after all that’s been lost, all that’s left to lose, is gone, whatever comes next will be almost unimaginable. Think ahead 50 years! And, right now, all of us are creating the eggs that will be fertilized in the next decade, nurtured by history, and finally born into consciousness. The increasing rapidity of change, the demise of the old, and universal longing for a different type of world are churning together towards a near future, fertile and explosive, guaranteeing huge, ripe, new fruit. The likes of which we’ve never seen.

If we are lucky, we’ll be able to see the good of what we’ve wrought take the world to a higher level of reality. If we fail, well, you know…

“Future=Fertile” is not about the news. It is about now. It’s about the early, instinctual, almost mechanical (outdated?) biological actions geared towards creation. Take a moment to consider what we have and what we would like our world to become. It’s our baby to make, together.

God, that’s scary.
Wait, it could be fun!

Either way, we are in this together.

out of the blue presents works by 24 prominent artists from New York City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, London, Toronto and Vancouver.

The exhibition focuses on the dynamics of human creativity as a metaphor for geological and atmospheric phenomena. Treating issues of weather both literally and symbolically, out of the blue approaches the creative process as a kind of weather system.

Ideas, like hurricanes, seem to come "out of the blue," though they arrive through a combination of complex forces. Through metaphors provided by art, out of the blue leads us through the tangle of influences—both innovative and destructive—that humans exert upon one another and the environment. Understanding and cultivating these influences and relationships is the key to our cultural vitality in a world where technological hubris and political arrogance can overshadow tolerance and collaboration.

out of the blue generates its own weather conditions, a storm of intertwined processes--artistic, social, political, atmospheric, and geological. As we influence one another, we in turn affect our culture and the environment, and creativity itself becomes a force of nature.

The International Juried Show, one of the artistic highlights of the exhibition year at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. This renowned and highly acclaimed annual juried exhibition draws many entrants from around the world, whose work reflects every art medium. This year, the Art Center received 1600 entries, representing the mediums of painting, drawing, textiles, pastels, prints, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, watercolor, and photography; In addition to the submissions that came from every area of the U.S., entries were received from Austria, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Korea, France, Spain, Belgium, Japan, Germany, Croatia, China, Switzerland, Brazil and the Philippines.

The Art Center proudly welcomed Adelina Vlas, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as this year’s juror. Adelina has an M.A. in Art History and a Curatorial Diploma in Visual Cultural from York University in Canada, as well as an M.A. in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London where she co-curated the exhibitions Public Smog and Various Small Fires. Previously, Adelina has worked at the National Gallery of Canada. She has written texts for various exhibitions including Live Cinema/Carlos Amorales: Four Animations, Five Drawings, and a Plague (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2008), Various Small Fires (Royal College of Art, 2007) and Noah’s Ark (National Gallery of Canada, 2004). Her writings have also appreared in ArtAsiaPacific and art in culture (Korea). Adelina is fluent in English, French, Italian and Romanian. Over the last year, she has served as a juror for Global Warming, Ice Box (Philadelphia), and Solid Gold, Vox Populi (Philadelphia).

Report from Paris: exhibition at Galerie Lavignes Bastille

NEW exhibition at Galerie Lavignes Bastille, Paris opened on October, 14 2008 on a sunny evening with a great international crowd and lots of conversations about the work exhibited.
Miska Knapek shows his labor intensive time photographs together with Noah Fishers' prints from hand painted negatives. In the second room Marie Noelle Fontan and Tuula Närhinen are showing their nature inspired work: Marie takes more romantic view, Tuula opens us the processes in nature.The upper level has drawings made using hair as a line by Lindsey Adelman and large scale graphite drawings by Jaanika Peerna.
