FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jaanika Peerna — “Traces of a Sweet Connect”

June 13 – July 5, 2009

Reception: Saturday, June 13, 6 - 9 pm

GO NORTH is very pleased to present an exhibition of recent work by Jaanika Peerna entitled “Traces of a Sweet Connect.” This is Peerna’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, and includes large- and small-scale drawings, installation, and video work. The show runs from June 13 to July 5, 2009. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 6 to 9 pm.

Jaanika Peerna’s work tends to inhabit a particular realm within the viewer’s imagination which welcomes the mesmerism of simple lines, shadow-play, tidal push and pull. In this realm things remain quiet only until the contemplative qualities of her lines, whether drawn or projected, give way to the repeated swells of intensity contained in her gestures. An encounter with her work is by turns soothing and disruptive, reverie-inducing and troubling, reactions to be expected from work that, in an essential way, deals with change. According to Peerna, her interests lie, “in the never-ending process of becoming with no story, no beginning, no end—just the current moment in flux.” Positioning herself at a crossroads of digital and traditional media, Peerna often deals with the themes of water, simplicity, and silence as platforms that illustrate flux. Beyond offering us an experience of change, Peerna always endeavors to make invisible connections and energy visible. Some evidence of this is revealed in her working process: “I draw on a sheet of paper placed on the floor. I move around the paper and then mark down the lines and dots capturing the very moment at hand. No pre-made plans in my head. My whole effort and attention are there at the tip of the pencil. By listening to the momentary sound the pencil makes on the surface, every drawing is the most truthful memory of the time taken up by the making of the drawing.”

“Traces of a Sweet Connect” is the latest installment of GO NORTH’s special program focusing on Estonian artists. Through this ongoing program, visitors are afforded a rare opportunity to experience contemporary art by artists who originate from a country that, until recently, has been under-recognized in the US as a source of dynamic creative vision. This exhibition is supported in part by the Consulate General of Estonia in New York.

Jaanika Peerna holds an MFA in intermedia design from SUNY New Paltz, and has worked as a teaching artist at DIA:Beacon and at the Visual Thinking Strategies project of the Soros Foundation. Peerna has had solo shows in New York and in Tallinn, Estonia, her native country. Recent exhibitions include “New” at the Galerie Lavignes Bastille in Paris and participation at the Bridge Art Fair in New York. Peerna’s video work along with Bill Viola’s and Susan Jenning’s will be included in “H20: Film on Water” at the Mill in Newport, NH opening on August 8th 2009.

Gallery hours: 12 - 6 pm Saturday and Sunday, and by appointment.
