Solo Exhibition at SG Gallery, Venice

submergeemerge
solo exhibition I Jaanika Peerna

15 -31 January, 2015

22 January 2015, 6pm
Performance with Lucio Corrente (cello)
Venice is in the constant flux of emerging & submerging. There are reminders of it everywhere; even the gallery space gets flooded at times! Jaanika Peerna creates a room size drawing installation that marks the highest ever water levels in the gallery and adds spouts that could turn on, at any moment.
She uses plastic film for her graphite drawings which makes them resistant to getting wet. There will also be a drawing series, “Three Movements on Water”.
All works have been created during her residency at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia and in co-operation with Artist Pension Trust ®.

Jaanika Peerna presents her new site-specific drawing installation for the solo project. Movement and sound is created by a softly blowing fan, and the artist will occasionally introduce elements of performance within the installation.

Harjutusi joontele/ Exercises for Lines : solo in Tallinn

The third solo exhibition of Jaanika Peerna in her homeland Estonia turns the gallery Vaal into a gym where both imaginary and real lines can put their creativity and flexibility on test. 13-meter long straight lines hang between the ceiling and the floor while shorter lines try out their qualities on the walls of the gallery’s second floor.
Line has been one of the centerpieces of Peerna’s artistic creation since the beginning of her career in New York. The process of drawing is very demanding for the artist as it requires focused physical energy as well as concentration of mind. Only by combining these two has it been possible to create such straight lines as can be seen on the pieces of this exhibition.
Peerna has been researching lines by means of drawing, video and light art combined with the techniques of installation and performance. Her recent production brings closer together the pieces of art created in the silence of the studio and pieces created during performances.
During the opening evening of the exhibition on Friday, August 1, a performance took place on the topic of “Exercises for Lines” created by the artist Jaanika Peerna alongside her colleagues from the world of movement (üüve-lydia Toompere), voice (Anne Prommik), design (Björn Koop) and music (Anne Vatsk). The evening was a playful multimedia event where the audience can was alos aligned with the mood.

'Advancing, Retreating' is an iterative process that seeks its point of equilibrium, by tracing the space with the exploration of action and movement, not with the concept itself.
The artist sculpts the 'space' as raw, primordial  material  to return the 'Space' as an element of meaning for humans, as a synaptich environment for the body.
Not an a priori Kantian space, but the result of the dialectical  fine perception of the density, a border between the full and the empty, between the delineated traces of the graphite on paper and the  energetic movement of the body  in the space, on a search for the strange attractors, unperturbed centers of imperceptible vibrations.

It is a stable representation of the region of chaos, tracing the border of temporary balance between a controlled emotion reminescent Soviet realism with the creative emotion  of Western performance in a  dialogue that the artist Jaanika Peerna, belonging to both cultures, tries to elaborate in her research and her works.

On view there will be a large room-size drawing installation, a trilogy of counterpoint drawings, and a video installation.  The artist will hold a drawing performance working on the large gallery windows.

The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Nando Randi, founder of Ninapì art gallery.
