The
objective of Vadabus/Freedom 2011 is to give to Estonian artists
the
possibility to speak of their own experience of freedom in the
system of
signs of contemporary art, and to do so in dialogue with
French,
Bulgarian and Japanese artists.
Like
science, art mirrors society and orients it towards the future.
Thus the
participants to the project Vadabus/Freedom 20011 speak of
ourselves
and our dreams. We dream for instance to disrupt the
unfolding of
things (Jaanika Peerna), to free oneself for the next
world (Jass
Kaselaan, Elo Liiv), to find one’s own space (Einike
Leppik), to
flee and simply get lost (Flo Kasearu), to be able to
communicate
withouth linguistic bareers (Aili Vahtrapuu), of the freedom to say “NO”
(CZEKA), of what one thinks (sometimes) of the family (Marko Mäetamm) or of
bioethics (Veronika Valk), but also of politics - of the possibility to
look
under the
skirt of politics (Terje Ojaver), not to mention the freedom
to wear the
skirt of not (Kiwa / Terje Toomistu).
Today, in 2011,
this exhibition about freedom looks squarely at freedom.
Last but not
least, I hope that this exhibit will make you laugh at
least once.
Because laughing about things is a source of freedom.
The project
is exhibited in the rococo 18th century castle of
Asnière,
designed by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne,
Which will
add another interesting layer to the exhibition.

Peerna’s work included in the exhibition:
Smoke Free Fall: site specific two channel video installation, 2
projectors, 2 DVD players DVD, mirrors, 2011
Smoke Free Fall is a
site specific video installation using large video projections of downward
moving smoke on a wall, with a reflective floor surface nearby. Free fall is
something that is a familiar experience for only a few of us, and in small
doses, though most of us have seen objects in free fall. Smoke in Peerna’s
installation seems to be free in its downward motion until we realize that
smoke does not usually move downwards of its own volition. From here on the
thoughts and interpretations that follow will be different for each visitor.
